Sauganash is a Potawatomi word meaning “Englisman” or “man who speaks English.” The Englishman at the center of this story is Billy Caldwell Jr., the half-Indigeonous, half-British man who was instrumental in negotiating some of the treaties that ceded Indigeounous territory to the United States federal government.
