Earlier this week Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaking at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council said, “There seems to be a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes.” Pillay was referring to Israel’s ground invasion of Gaza. She said Israel had not done enough to protect civilians. Also this week, British foreign secretary Philip Hammond said Hamas was also in breach of international law by “firing hundreds of rockets at Israeli towns and cities indiscriminately.” We’ll take a look at what sorts of acts of war are actually considered a war crime under international law with Cherif Bassiouni, professor emeritus of law at DePaul University.
