Dr. Sheik Umar Khan, the doctor leading Sierra Leone’s fight against the worst Ebola outbreak in history, died this week. The deadly virus has killed hundreds of people in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. It spreads directly, human-to-human, by secretions such as saliva, sweat, and blood. There are currently no vaccines or antiviral medications available to treat the disease. We’ll take a look at why the current outbreak has been so difficult to contain with Laurie Garrett, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations.
