Sometimes one of the biggest challenges in public health is patient access to much-needed equipment and expertise. Hospital ships have long been used by government to bring the hospital to people. Since 1978, the nonprofit group Mercy Ships has operated several ships that visit coastal areas of some of the most impoverished countries in the world. The current hospital director for Mercy Ships’ flagship ‘Africa Mercy’ is Chicago’s area native Nate Claus. His colleagues were recently featured in a documentary called The Surgery Ship which piloted a series of the same name on National Geographic. The film is showing tonight at AMC River East, and Nate Claus joins Worldview to discuss the film and his work.
