Last week in Vienna, multinational talks commenced on the Syria crisis. Iran was also included but now the Iranians are threatening to withdraw from the talks, scheduled to resume in a couple of weeks. Russia has been somewhat positive. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the “Vienna format was almost a perfect format for multilateral efforts for Syrian settlement and we want to anchor that.” Some observers see the talks as a failure, no matter the result. National Security heavyweight, Henry Kissinger, wrote a scathing critique of the Obama administration’s Syria policy in a Wall Street Journal editorial. Another security expert, who agrees with Kissinger’s suggestions for stability in Syria is Joe Kechichian, a Gulf States scholar and senior writer for Gulf News. His latest article is “The Vienna Fiasco” He’ll tell us why he thinks “that both Washington and Moscow ought to get out of the Syrian kitchen”. Kechichian’s latest book is ‘Iffat al Thunayan: An Arabian Queen’. (Photo: Flickr/a.anis)
