Pizzeria Uno’s famous pie, er, bread & cheese casserole
All this week, we’re serving up our five favorite “Top 5” lists from the past year. We begin with the list that caused more conversation and debate in one day, than the Grahamwich opening last Wednesday. I look forward to hearing all of your “seasoned” comments. 1. Pizzeria Uno - Cheese casserole, par-baked dough and more tourists than Navy Pier
2. Vito & Nick’s - Extra greasy (factory-made) cheese, lifeless crust - akin to Madison’s Pizza Pit (great at 3 a.m. though)
3. Pizza D.O.C. - More cheese than a Wisconsin dairy rally; oddly characterless crust despite wood-burning oven
4. Aurelio’s - Even if it’s from the original store (and from the old oven) the crust still disappoints and the toppings all taste mass-produced/chain-like
5. Spacca Napoli - Despite artisanal approach, finished pies are like eating a bowl of soup surrounded by soggy dough with barely enough char at the edges (despite drop-dead gorgeous wood-burning oven) Interesting side note since this list was first published: the original Pizzaola here, Nella, had left quite awhile ago, and was briefly the namesake of her own Neapolitan joint in Lincoln Park earlier this year, but it didn’t last long. She has already left, and the business is now called Francesca’s Pizzeria. Hmmm.
