Turkey ranks below countries like Burma and Russia in the Press Freedom Index. Over the weekend Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan launched raids on print and television media outlets connected to muslim cleric and political figure, Fethullah Gülen. Gulen lives in self-exile in the United States. Erdogan says the move was in response to “dirty operations” by government enemies. When criticized by the European Union, Erdogan responded that the E.U. should “mind its own business.” We’ll talk with Kerim Balci, editor in chief of the journal, Turkish Review. He also contributes to Today’s Zaman and Zaman dailies, all published by the Gülen-founded Zaman Media Group. Balci is in the U.S. and has been speaking about the crackdown. He says he may be arrested when he returns to Turkey. People gather outside the Palace of Justice in Ankara, Turkey, Monday, Dec. 15, 2014 to protest against the latest detentions of journalists.
