Ukrainian parliamentary elections took place on Sunday, and preliminary results suggest that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party is likely to win an outright majority in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament. A television comedian, Zelensky won the Ukrainian presidency in May. Now it appears that we will not need to join a coalition in order to form a government. If the predictions turn out to be accurate, Zelensky will be Ukraine’s first president since independence to be backed by a parliamentary majority. Joining us to discuss is David Marples, university professor and chair of the history and classics department at the University of Alberta.
