The leader of the one of Chicago‘s most influential Hispanic community organizations says he’s keeping an eye out on the upcoming mayoral election. That comes after current Mayor Richard Daley announced he’s not seeking re-election.

Juan Rangel heads up the United Neighborhood Organization, or UNO. The group has close ties to Mayor Daley. Daley recently appointed Rangel to the Chicago Park District board.

Rangel says his group is always looking for opportunities for Hispanics to move up, and that might mean backing a candidate who could become Chicago‘s first Hispanic mayor.

RANGEL: We certainly look forward to looking at different candidates who come forward and see what their history is and what their plans for the future are and how those plans will affect the Hispanic community.

UNO runs one of the largest charter school networks in Chicago. Rangel credits Daley with strong support of charter schools and that should be part of his legacy.
