Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called the mass killing and exodus of Rohingya people in Burma “ethnic cleansing.” Many Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to sprawling, makeshift refugee camps. The U.N.’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) called the humanitarian situation “unprecedented in terms of volume and speed.”

U.S. House Representative Jan Schakowsky represents Chicago’s north suburbs. She was part of a Congressional delegation to Bangladesh last month to visit Rohingya refugees. Schakowsky traveled to Bangladesh with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. Both support targeted sanctions against the perpetrators of the Rohingya crisis.

Schakowsky is also an outspoken democracy supporter for Honduras. The country held contested presidential elections on Nov. 26. In a New York Times op-ed, Schakowsky wrote the current Honduran government is “inching closer and closer to authoritarian rule and all-out dictatorship.”

Schakowsky joins Worldview to discuss human rights in Honduras and Bangladesh.
