Writer Stephen Kinzer has spent years chronicling U.S. intervention in other countries. His latest book The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire, details debates that raged over the U.S. becoming an imperial power during the Spanish-American War.

Many observers argue the U.S. is today undergoing a dramatic shift inward, rejecting the global position it’s played since WWII. Kinzer joins us to offer his thoughts on how history has shaped the president’s decision to use U.S. power abroad.
