U.S. Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are in Egypt meeting with Egypt’s leadership interim president Adly Mansour, defense minister Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and interim foreign minister Nabil Fahmy. During on appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” Graham said “I know it’s dangerous, but we need to be there with our diplomats giving the unified message to Egypt. Do not let these people drive us out of the Mid East.” He also said that Egypt needs to hold democratic elections and that ” The (Muslim) Brotherhood needs to get off the streets and back into the political arena and fight your differences there, and we need to put Egypt back to work. If this continues, it’s going to be a failed state. That’s why we’re going.” Nezar Alsayyad, chair of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley tells us whether the U.S. still holds sway in Egypt.
