Violence on the rise in Iraq
AFP reports that 570 people were killed this month in Iraq. The country has seen a rise in violence since last April and the security situation continues to deteriorate nearly two years after the U.S. military withdrew from the country.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is in Washington this week seeking additional U.S. military support to help quell the rising violence. Iraqi American Laith Saud, a visiting professor at DePaul University’s Religious Studies Department, tells us what’s behind the rise in violence.
