Lithuania’s WWII history remains controversial. A historical commission to set the record straight was first established in 1998. One of the commission’s new members is Johnathan Brent, executive director of The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. It was founded in 1925 in what is today the city of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. YIVO relocated to New York in 1940, but its mission to preserve the cultural history of Jews in Eastern Europe has remained the same. Brent explains the commission’s attempt to set the record straight about WWII war crimes in Lithuania. (Photo: Courtesy of YIVO)
