WBEZ’s Chicago and Illinois News Roundup: February 16, 2018

WBEZ brings you fact-based news and information. Sign up for our newsletters to stay up to date on the stories that matter.

It was a big, almost overwhelming week for local, state and national news. Here in Chicago, we kicked off the week with the story of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan being accused of covering up claims of sexual harassment by one of his top political workers. That story was quickly eclipsed when police commander Paul Bauer was shot and killed in the Loop near the Thompson Center, a sad moment for our city that came just a day before another horrific school shooting in Florida that took the lives of 17 people.

Those are just a few of the stories and topics Morning Shift is digging into in our latest weekly news roundup. Each Friday, we interview three local journalists from inside and outside the WBEZ newsroom to bring context and analysis to the biggest Chicagoland and Illinois news stories of the week. The goal is to get listeners up to speed on what they might have missed over the last five days so they’re feeling prepared to understand the latest about our city and state going into the weekend.

WBEZ’s Friday Chicago and Illinois News Roundup is also available as a podcast so people can listen on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to get ready for the coming week in everything from politics to education to criminal justice and more.
