President Donald Trump’s election is one example of a global wave of far-right political leaders who are gaining strength and support for their ideas that many view as authoritarian. Many of these movements overtly espouse fascist ideology or praise historical examples of fascist leadership. Joining us is professor of philosophy at Yale University, Jason Stanley. He’s in Chicago to present his new book, How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them. Stanley’s book proposes the argument that nations don’t inherently have to be governed by avowed fascists to suffer from fascist ideology, and argues that fascist roots and an associated “Us and Them” ideology have been present in American politics for at least the last hundred years.
