When refugees make the long and often difficult journey from their homeland, they don’t have room for a lot of personal objects. An exhibit at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie dives into that question. It’s called, “What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization.” A portion of the exhibit is also on display at the Daley Center Concourse Gallery through April, 2016. We revisit a conversation we had with photographer Jim Lommasson, who has documented the few items that Iraqi refugees have carried with them to Chicago. Lommasson and Othman Al Ani, who is featured in the exhibit, join us to talk about the kinds of stories these objects tell. Guests: Jim Lommasson is a photographer. Othman Al Ani is with the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society. He is featured in the exhibit.
