Film contributor Claire Denis is a French filmmaker and screenwriter, renowned for films including Chocolat, Beau Travail and 35 Shots of Rum. Her new film, High Life, stars Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche as passengers on a spaceship outside the solar system. The ship is populated by prisoners and death row inmates who have agreed to what in all probability is a suicide mission: flying into a black hole in the hopes of usings its energy to power the Earth. Claire stopped by to chat with film contributor Milos Stehlik about the film, which New Yorker film critic Richard Brody called “an intergalactic Lord of the Flies,” and how approaches and themes from her over 30-year-long career in filmmaking found their way into her first science fiction film.
