On January 26, 1788, the first fleet of colonizers arrived in Australia. The boatload of about 1500 included 775 convicts. Today, this day is still celebrated as Australia’s national holiday, known as “Australia Day.” Historian John Schmidt recalls why a ship full of criminals was sent to help create what we now know as the country of Australia.
