Fighting in recent days has made the delivery of aid to the besieged neighborhood Yarmouk nearly impossible. About 18,000 Palestinian refugees live in a camp in the Damascus neighborhood. A truce brokered earlier between rebels and the Assad regime has collapsed, despite a recent visit by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Filippo Grandi, the head of UNRWA was part of the delegation and he described the scene this way: “It’s like the appearance of ghosts. These are people who have not been out of there, that have been trapped in there not only without food, medicines, clean water – all the basics – but also probably completely subjected to fear because there was fierce fighting…They can hardly speak. I tried to speak to many of them, and they all tell the same stories of complete deprivation.” Grandi discusses the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yarmouk. (Photo: AP/UNRWA)
