More children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder than ever before. That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated half million young people with autism are expected to hit adulthood in the next decade. That leaves many questions when support or services stop. Here in Illinois, children with autism receive special education services like speech and occupational therapy until they turn 22 or graduate high school…whichever comes first. For WBEZ, Camille Smith talks to some young adults taking different path as they transition out of the school system.
