Between 1995 and 2005, total giving by all U.S. charitable foundations tripled. Of the amount given to international projects, over a third went to global health initiatives. 
 
Laurie Garrett is a senior fellow on global health at the council on foreign relations and the author of Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health. She recently wrote an article in Foreign Affairs called “The Challenge of Global Health.” In that article, she says that we're in an “age of generosity,” especially when it comes to fighting diseases internationally. But she says that all of this generosity could not only fall short of expectations, but actually make things worse on the ground.
