Burmese Gem Ban Legislation Signed into Law

Brian Leber

Last week, President Bush signed into law the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act of 2008. The legislation hopes to tighten an existing ban and bar the importation of Burmese rubies and jade into the United States and close a loophole allowing Burmese gemstones cut and polished in other countries to enter the U.S.

With the regime's near-total control of the gem trade, every Burmese gem offers either direct or indirect support to the military government and helps fund the military government's continued oppression of the people of Burma .
