Global Organized Crime

“McMafia” author Misha Glenny

With the collapse of the Soviet Union , and deregulation of international financial markets thereafter, governments and entrepreneurs alike became intoxicated by forecasts of limitless expansion into newly open markets. Few could foresee that the biggest success story to arise from these events would be the globalization of organized crime.

Current estimates suggest that illegal trade accounts for nearly one-fifth of global GDP.

Writer Misha Glenny has surveyed the many different forms that organized crime takes in today's globalized world.

He is the Former Central Europe Correspondent for the BBC World Service. And he is the author of McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld.

Misha Glenny was well know for his reporting on the Balkan wars with the BBC.

When you first read McMafia, it appears that Misha got interested in organized crime through his cigarette addiction while in Yugoslavia . Jerome asked him to explain that.
