For better or worse, China lit up the world's stage this summer with the Beijing Olympics.

Human rights organizations tried to use China 's limelight to pressure China into reconsidering its positions on Darfur and Burma . At the same time, other observers heralded this summer as China 's return as a great world power. 

Dimon Liu is Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow at the Council of Independent Colleges.  I talked to her when she was in town to speak at Benedictine University .

Dimon has been following China 's rise over the last several decades and has criticized the nation's commitment to democracy.
