Beijing views any sign of US support for the Tibetan spiritual leader as a challenge to its territorial integrity. Tensions between China and the US have flared in recent months over internet freedom and arms sales over Taiwan, but the President has already faced criticism at home for not meeting with the Dalai Lama when he came to Washington last November.
