Barbara Byrd-Bennett, the chief of Chicago Public Schools, is taking a leave of absence amid a federal investigation involving a no-bid contract awarded to her former employer. In announcing the leave this afternoon, Chicago Board President David Vitale said the investigation could impact her ability to effectively lead. Board of Education Vice President Jesse Ruiz will take over as interim CEO. WBEZ’s Becky Vevea was at the news conference and joins us with more.
