We continue our series on Chicago neighborhoods we call “Chi City.” We’ve looked at Wicker Park, Bronzeville, and last week, Woodlawn, Washington Park and South Shore. Today, we take on Chicago’s northernmost neighborhood: Rogers Park, how it’s developed, the demographic shifts, and what it’s like to live and do business there. We all have clear ideas of Rogers Park’s identity. We know it’s Jewish roots and now the South Asian presence. It’s voice in the city’s progressive movement has always been clear - there was time you said this would be a neighborhood that would never have had a Starbucks! Well, that’s not true anymore. So what is Rogers Park’s identity? Joining us in studio to discuss is Neal Samors, local historian and author of the book Chicago’s Far North Side: An Illustrated History of Rogers Park and West Ridge. Plus, Michael James, co-founder of one of the iconic restaurants in the neighborhood: The Heartland Cafe on Glenwood Avenue. (Photo: Flickr/Renee_McGurk)
