Every time the weather gets hot we hear the phrase “Check on Your Neighbor.” We hear that now because during the 1995 heatwave, many of the more than 700 fatalities were among our elderly population. All this month, we’ve been talking about that Heatwave because Eric Klinenberg’s book of the same name as been our Afternoon Shift book club selection for July. Simone Mitchell-Peterson, CEO, Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Chicago Chapter and Deputy Commissioner Suzet McKinney, Chicago Department of Health’s Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Preparedness join the Afternoon Shift to discuss social infrastructure and how to protect the elderly from harsh weather.
