During his re-election campaign, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said that “the next mayor must work hard to reduce crime in every neighborhood across our city.” And while homicides may be down compared to totals in previous years, 2015 has seen an early spike in the number of shootings and shooting deaths. And, as WBEZ has reported, homicide clearance rates are at their lowest levels in decades in Chicago. So now that the election is over, where does the mayor need to focus his energy to make good on his campaign pledge to make “every neighborhood” safer? Aysha Butler, a community activist and President of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood or R.A.G.E., discusses the issues.
