In Chicago, many immigrants choose to live in close proximity with other members of the same community, and to participate in community organizations and events. For many immigrants this may mean community meetings, or at least church and a series of social functions to mark life’s transitions—births, weddings, funerals. But for some, the community is not a refuge, but a constant reminder that they don’t fit in.
