As a new generation of veterans returns from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they take their place alongside veterans of other American wars. We’re been bringing you the stories this summer of some veterans, from World War II to today. Our multimedia documentary series, After the Wars.

Today, Richard Mrozinski tells his story. Mrozinski served two tours in Vietnam doing what he describes as predominantly administrative work. While deployed, he questioned the justification of the war, but he says he remained dedicated to his duty. Mrozinski says when he returned he shied away from the veteran community, pouring himself into his work, and into playing music.

Over the years, he became increasingly involved in veterans issues, and eventually became commander of his local VFW post. Later he was elected to the LaPorte County Council, and today is one of the leading advocates for veterans in his area.
