There’ll be a couple of fresh faces at Chicago’s next City Council meeting. No, you didn’t miss a municipal election. Last week, Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed businessman Joe Moreno for the First Ward and State Representative Deborah Graham for the 29th Ward. But these weren’t exactly your standard mid-term appointments. Mayor Daley opened the call for applications inviting anyone who was interested in the job. The idea follows a trend to make governments more transparent. But just how “open” is this “open government?” Mick Dumke is a political reporter for the Chicago Reader. He talks more about these appointments.
