North suburban Highland Park High School has found itself in a whirlwind of controversy this week. School officials there cancelled a girls’ basketball trip to Arizona for a tournament scheduled next season. They say the state’s controversial new law which allows police to identify and arrest suspected illegal immigrants could put students at risk. Former Alaska Governor and Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin criticized the district while she was in town Wednesday. She encouraged the girls to take the trip anyway. Some parents are also speaking out against the district’s decision—but they say it’s not about politics. Michael Evans is the father of a junior on the girls’ basketball team.
