History of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy

The U.S. military's top brass met earlier this week to discuss the future of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Equal rights advocates and military personnel, as well as President Barack Obama, are calling for a repeal of an end to the Clinton-era legislation banning openly gay men and women from serving in the military. To learn more about the policy, and where the debate has moved since 1993, we turn to military historian Michael Sherry. Sherry is a history professor at Northwestern University in Evanston.
