Back in the ’60s and ’70s, Joe Tex was big on the soul music scene. And, just when it seemed like his career was really taking off, he gave it all up to become a Muslim preacher. A new play at the Black Ensemble Theater—I Gotcha: The Story of Joe Tex and The Soul Clan—charts the life and times of Joe Tex. Playwrights Joe Plummer and David Barr joined Eight Forty-Eight’s Richard Steele to talk about the play.

The play opens this Sunday night at Black Ensemble Theater in Chicago.
