Nominations for the Academy Awards have come out and the film The Hurt Locker is among those in the Best Picture category. Director Kathryn Bigelow is also up for her own award. Bigelow’s story centers on Sgt. James T. Sanborn, a bomb squad technician working the war-torn streets of Baghdad. The title of the film alludes to the mental and physical pain that victims of explosions suffer. The Hurt Locker is a psychological thriller but it’s also based on the ‘first-hand’observations of journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal. While it’s not necessarily a local story we were lucky enough to conduct one of the early interviews about the film.

To celebrate the success of the film, we’re re-airing last year’s interview, brought to us by Eight Forty-Eight film critic Jonathan Miller. He talked with Bigelow and Bowl, who says what he witnessed back in 2004 needed to be documented. The Hurt Locker is up for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and best director.
