Earlier this week, an elderly couple living in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood was found living in squalor after a neighbor called authorities. Neighbors said they hadn’t seen the couple for a few weeks. As summer and hot weather approaches, the elderly may be more apt to stay inside, where air conditioning keeps them cool. But not seeing them regularly may be more common in some neighborhoods than others. Dr. Kate Cagney researches how our neighborhoods relate to the health and well being of elderly residents. She explains what these factors mean.
