The Cook County Board of Review is charged with the task of reviewing property tax assessments. If you don't think your property tax assessment is fair, you can take your claim to the board for a hearing. There are three commissioners who essentially act as judges to decide whether or not to revise your assessment. The commissioners have wide latitude in making their decision. But there are still rules they should follow. That's not happening, though—at least in one case—according to an article in the latest issue of Chicago
magazine. The article—"Joseph Berrios, Candidate for Cook County Assessor: Under the Microscope"
is a joint project between Chicago
magazine and the watchdog group, the Better Government Association
. Andy Shaw, Executive Director of the Better Government Association, explains the investigation.Music Button: Alex Cuba, "Como Amigos", from the CD Alex Cuba, (Caracol)
