Summer break ended for Chicago’s students but the tension between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union continued. Issues like scrapped teacher raises and the length of the school day contributed to the acrimony. The CTU refused to give into the city’s attempts to increase the time students – and teachers – spend at school. But individual schools decided to break rank by voting to extend school hours.
