On June 18 of last year, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford mysteriously disappeared. When he emerged to face the public and his family a week later, he brought with him a surprising announcement. Sanford’s press conference filled in some missing details—notably that he was not “hiking on the Appalachian Trail,” but that he was in fact in Argentina. But what was missing from the announcement was the presence of the first lady of South Carolina, Jenny Sanford. Mark Sanford’s infidelity was not news to her. She’d found out about his affair some time earlier, but stayed with him to save their marriage. The Winnetka, Illinois, native has written about her marriage in the new book Staying True and she joins us with more.
