The music of Jodee Lewis and Steve Hendershot might seem too beautiful, too ethereal, too country to be a product of gritty grey Chicago. But indeed it is. The duo’s paths converged on our windy streets, after youths spent in small-town Missouri and suburban Michigan. Their sound kind of tracks their personal journeys, in encompassing the range of the American heartland. That may be why, in spite of the literal spareness of their music, it can be hard to categorize. Call it folk or roots, country or alt country. It’s even a little rock with a twist of contemporary Christian. The Spares to perform live in our Jim and Kay Mabie performance studio. They’re joined by Jason Reed on mandolin.
