YOUmedia Takes Kids Off the Street and In to a Creative Realm

Late last month, Governor Quinn passed legislation to improve access to after school programs. The goal is to extend students' learning experiences outside the classroom, and to reduce violence and crime by keeping them off the streets. A similar line of reasoning inspired YouMedia, a free, digital media space founded last year for Chicago teenagers. Housed at the Harold Washington Library in downtown Chicago, the space provides students with access to all kinds of media, from video games to lessons in digital editing and production. Nichole Pinkard is one of the founders of YouMedia, and a Visiting Associate Professor in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University in Chicago.
