Gail Kalver has been involved in the Chicago dance community for over two decades. She spent much of that time as the executive director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where she worked with Artistic Director Lou Conte, advancing the troupe from a local treasure to an international phenomenon.
She was also instrumental in developing the Chicago Dance Initiative, which promoted new choreography and collaboration. With support from the Auditorium Theater, she is bringing the opera Margaret Garner to Chicago.
It’s the true life story of a slave, played by mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, who makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her children from a life of slavery.
Gail joins Kelly Kleiman to talk about her new project and her many years spent in the Chicago performing arts.
