As the first act opens, the four defendants— Mary Beth Lubbers, Johnny Baranski, Thom Clark, and Eileen Kreutz—are serving as their own attorneys in a trial held at the Dirkson Federal Building in downtown Chicago. When witnesses testify that they saw the four activists pour liquid on the paperwork, Baranski explains it was symbolic of the blood shed in Vietnam and other places where the U.S. had troops.
