Aldermen respond to Mayor’s address calling for more accountability
Chicago aldermen experienced something Wednesday they probably have never seen from a mayor who’s known for his rough and tough exterior: a man near tears. In an emotional moment in a more than 30 minute speech to the Chicago City Council, Mayor Emanuel said there are no second class citizens in Chicago. The mayor apologized for the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by Chicago police officer Jason VanDyke. He also laid out what needs to change to foster trust and respect between police officers and the city’s minority communities. Two local lawmakers who could help bring about change in their communities join the program: 12th ward Alderman George Cardenas, Chairman of the Latino Caucus, and 6th ward Alderman Roderick Sawyer, Chairman of the Black Caucus.
