Chicago Public Schools will host yet another community meeting Thursday in the Austin neighborhood to discuss the issue of closing schools. The district is expected to release a pared down list of schools still eligible for closure by Feb. 13. But the issue of closing schools is more than just moving students to another school. One issue is what the district plans to do with the vacant buildings after the school is shut down. School leaders say they will not put new schools in those buildings or hand them over to charter school like they have in the past. WBEZ’s Becky Vevea is heading out to another city—Philadelphia--that’s shuttered it’s schools to see what’s happened to those empty buildings.
