Gentrification (4 of 10): Is ‘gentrifier's guilt’ real?

The Avondale neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side has been gentrifying. This once predominantly Latino neighborhood is starting to look more white. And it’s median home price has gone up nearly 35 percent since the housing bubble. Some homes are selling well above $500,000. WBEZ’s own Susie An moved to that neighborhood a few years ago and got us thinking what role the gentrifier’s awareness plays in the process. What responsibility, if any, does a gentrifier have when moving into a neighborhood? Susie An shares her story and urban scholar John Joe Schlichtman explains how identifying yourself as a conscious gentrifier is just one part of the problem-it’s what you do with that knowledge that matters.
