Advocates who watch out for the aging population say the U.S. is coming up on a “silver tsunami” as baby boomers move into senior citizen status. Some of these older adults will transition from life at home into living at nursing homes. A new investigation from the Center on Public Integrity places care at these nursing homes under the microscope. The Fund for Investigative Journalism also supported the project. Reporter Jeff Kelly Lowenstein found that low staffing levels can contribute to residents struggling to get proper and timely attention from nurses and caregivers. Lowenstein joins us to outline the series, and explain how elder care advocates are responding to the findings. Photo: Flickr/Alyssa L. Miller
