Jim DeRogatis And 'The Case Against R. Kelly': 'I Often Wonder If I Did Enough'

Back in 2000, Jim DeRogatis—then the pop music critic at the Chicago Sun-Times—received an anonymous fax. It read, “Dear Mr. DeRogatis. You wrote about R. Kelly a couple of weeks ago and compared him to Marvin Gaye. Well, I guess Marvin Gaye had his problems, too, but I don’t think they were like Robert’s. Robert’s problem—and it’s a thing that goes back many years—is young girls.”

That fax started a 20-year journey for DeRogatis reporting on allegations of sexual abuse and assault against the R&B star, including allegations that he sexually abused under-aged girls. That reporting is outlined in sometimes painful detail in DeRogatis's new book Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly.
